This past February, on a picturesque weekend on the Monterey Peninsula, with a warm sun beaming down the fairways, the fans that flocked to the 2010 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am were fortunate enough to witness some of the world's greatest golfers competing on one of the world's most prestigious courses, all on an amazingly gorgeous California day.
Across the country, the residents of Charlotte, North Carolina, were not as lucky. The temperatures dipped into the 30s, the wind howled and the rain came. The thought of playing golf on this day wasn't an appealing option to most, but there was one Charlotte resident who wasn't going to let the weather take him from the game.
Instead, Tom Reneau decided to bring the Pacific Ocean and Pebble Beach to Charlotte. He started by inviting the Olympic High School boys and girls golf teams over for the event. Then he tuned his big-screen television to the broadcast of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Finally, he loaded Pebble Beach on his GolfAchiever Simulator.
Before long there was a second competition taking place at this famous golf course. Only this competition was happening 2600 miles from California, in the dry comfort of Reneau's Charlotte house.
While Dustin Johnson and the rest of the PGA tour pros were battling it out for this year's Pro-Am title, the Sims Reeves coached high school golf team had found themselves in some intense battles of their own. They played Long Drive competitions on Pebble's famous eighteenth and KP Contests on the always difficult seventh. As they bombed drives down the fairway and watched their KP shots pepper the greens, the kids were able to witness the best players in the world competing on the same holes they were.
"As they compared the simulator to the real thing on t.v., the young golfers were amazed at how realistic the graphics were. It was like they were right there, playing with the pros, competing with the pros. It was every bit as realistic as actually being there." Reneau said.
Reneau, a class A professional and sponser of the Fort Mills Jr. Golf Association, has now had eight to ten groups in to play on his GolfAchiever Simulator and has had nothing but good feedback. He's exceptionally excited for the British Open... and for good reason. "It's not every day you have the opportunity to bring St. Andrews to Charlotte." |
