Located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale-based Focaltron Corporation was founded in 1996 with the objective of offering a new dimension to golf by delivering the highest level of accuracy and effectiveness in golf performance evaluation. Focaltron and the vision behind the company's first product the GolfAchiever - was conceived at the Stanford University Driving Range by Dr. Yi-Ching Pao, a two-time winner of the international R & D 100 Award and Stanford Electrical Engineering Ph.D. graduate.

While observing the frustrations of many golfers, Dr. Pao began to envision a product that could help golfers by measuring and instantly reporting golf swing and ball flight performance using extremely accurate laser technology. By using such a product, golfers would be able to determine how their swings could be improved and whether they were using the right equipment for their swing.

In order to evaluate the market opportunity of such a product, Dr. Pao sought the business expertise of Mrs. Arlene Pao to conduct initial market research. Already a highly successful entrepreneur in international business and finance, Mrs. Pao became positively convinced about the market potential of Dr. Pao's product idea after evaluating the golf industry and its similar existing products. She signed on as a co-founder of Focaltron and her initial responsibilities included writing the company business plan, establishing company objectives, and recruiting capital investors.

Concurrently, Dr. Pao was recruiting engineering talent to begin exploratory R&D on his new invention. Dr. Pao convinced fellow Stanford alum and noted scientist Dr. Mark Weckworth to contribute to the first stages of optics and electronics design. Dr. Weckworth became attached to the project and soon joined the team as a co-founder of Focaltron.

As development of the GolfAchiever progressed, news of the project began to spread. With its impressive technology and the strong reputations of the company’s co-founders, the investment and technology communities saw tremendous potential in Focaltron. This allowed the company to be highly selective in its choice of investment partners and in choosing its Board of Directors. Among the Focaltron investors and Board of Directors are founders, chairmen, executives, and scientists of major venture capital firms, private and public technology companies, and universities. One thing all members have in common is that each has played a key role in the incubation and growth of several multi-million dollar technology companies.

Four years of R&D, three patents, and seven product prototypes following Dr. Pao's day at the Stanford University Golf Course, Focaltron unveiled GolfAchiever to the golf industry on September 7, 2000, at the PGA International Golf Show in Las Vegas. While Dr. Pao continues to oversee product testing and product development, executing the Focaltron Business Plan is the focus of company President Mrs. Arlene Pao and the Focaltron management team of industry professionals.

"The Focaltron philosophy is simple - to be absolutely innovative and make our technology inherently useful and easy to use, while also achieving the highest possible accuracy. Therefore, for over 4 years, we have been diligently working behind the scenes in R&D, thoroughly field testing product prototypes outdoors to verify accuracy, and improving on every prototype before offering the 7th generation of the Achiever to the industry."
